The goal of Sunset Church of Christ Upward sports is to create the combination of great ministry and great sports. The ministry helps the Church connect with families through the universal language of sports. This ministry stresses values such as sportsmanship, teamwork, integrity and respect. This ministry incorporates Biblical principles into the sports experience. With every practice and game, Sunset’s coaches and referees lead in bible based devotionals and prayers. Together, we can provide the best sports experience possible for every child and family member.

Sunset Upward Sports Program generates its own revenue from parent paid fees. The fees cover all the costs to run the program and the equipment and uniforms for children. Sunset Church of Christ will incur no expenses as a result of this ministry. This sports ministry meets a need not currently provided by Sunset that will provide growth opportunities. The program will complement our ministry to Smart Starts/Bridgepoint schools.

Upward Sports is a first-class sports experience for children. The most effective way for this to happen is by providing healthy competition with effective ministry opportunities. Upward Sports emphasizes healthy competition, sportsmanship, skills building and fun versus the “win-at-all-costs” mentality associated with many sports leagues. Rules unique to Upward Sports—including game format, substitution system and rules for play—are designed to provide the best sports experience for every child. This works is by providing healthy competition and fun for children. On top of equipping children with sport fundamentals needed to participate at the next level, some distinctive features to Upward Sports are:

1. Each child is evaluated before the team selection process to create balanced teams.
2. Upward Sports utilizes a unique substitution system which guarantees every child equal playing time.
3. Upward Sports aims to teach both athletic skill as well as values for success on and off the playing field/court.
4. Upward Sports prioritizes a family friendly schedule by conducting one-hour practices and games each week.
5. With supportive coaches and a positive sports environment, Upward Sports is designed to bring out “the winner” in every child regardless of the game’s score.
